Pitch black darkness laced around every corner, cloaking the dangerous unknown in a sly blanket of invisibility. The only light was the weak reflection of the rusted street lamps, the dim beams illuminating lonely brick walls filled with desolate graffiti. Stray, empty cans were carelessly scattered among the paths covered with shattered glass. Loud wails and screeches could be heard from the wide patches of field placed among the open space. Music  booming so loud that it could easily destroy anyone's ears. It was like this every night. Just the same. An icy wind forced a little girl to shiver, short strands of brown hair dancing in the harsh breeze. Her face, cold and pale. Her feet, bare and bruised. The only clothing was a torn, light blue dress desperatly clinging onto her soft skin. Her eyes weren't filled with what you would expect from a normal little girl. They were empty, isolated. She didn't seem to care when the rough stones and thorns tackled her ankles, she just kept walking forward. Sad, isn't it?

Thud. She dropped to the floor, motionless. Was she dead? Nobody knew. Not a soul cared to even check if she was okay. But it's fine, because that's where our story begins.

Chapter one

Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. A slow, constant noise rang through the girl's head as she forced her dark green orbs to open. Her body was against soft grass placed in an open field. Quiet. Beautiful. The sun was gentle and warm against her skin; her silky, torn dress was dry and loose. Her delicate, brown locks only shuffled slightly as she got up, not even feeling the bruises and throbbing cuts that were once around her feet. A figure running, heavily breathing. She turned to see a smiling, young boy that looked like he was at the end of his teenage years. "Hi little girl! My name is Nate." He reached out one hand "I'm going to take you in, I mean, if you let me. You look like you need some help." She took his hand hesitantly, his body being the only cold thing here. "What's your name?" The slightly confused and distant eyes of hers trailed down in thought, only to look back up again. "I.. don't.. k-know.." She spoke quietly, slapping a hand over her mouth when she heard herself stutter. Nate chuckled kindly in response. "Hmm, how about Thea?" The girl nodded slowly, repeating the name to herself. A smile tugged at her lips at the sound of it.

The two plodded along the grass until a small village came into view. There were houses, gardens, animals, plants, a few trees and some friendly looking people. Nate's house was on the edge, a simple brown, brick roof and dark chocolate coloured walls. The lights were on, shining from the rectangular windows, making Thea feel welcome. Some smoke drifted from the top, signaling that the fireplace was alight. The wooden steps leading up to the door made a slight squeaky noise, making Thea giggle to herself. Nate opened the door and guided the small girl inside, a large puff of warm air hitting her face. Inside was stunning and it smelled like cinnamon too! Each room was filled with a soft, home-like light; the kitchen having the smell of cooking meat and veggies wafting around. They both entered a room with a TV against the middle wall, sofas surrounding the other walls of the room. The floor was made of cream wood and a gorgous red carpet was placed in the middle. Nate and Thea climbed up some more stairs before they reached two doors. The teenager opened the one which first came into view and lead Thea in.

"Dinner should be ready soon. This will be your room so make yourself at home! You can change into some fresh clothes here too. I'll see you in a couple of minutes, Thea." The door softly closed after Nate, leaving the small girl to herself. She changed into the clothes on her bed (a dark ginger dress with boots) and looked around. Her bed was coral with ginger lace and there was a small, white dressing table in the left corner. The walls were the same colour as the dress she was wearing, beautiful, cream butterfly stickers around the edges. Many stuffed toys of animals were found around the bed and spaces that would of been empty. At the end, there was one large window that she could see the rest of the village from. Just as she sighed in comfort, Nate requested for her presence at the kitchen. "Thea! Dinner's reader!"
